Adelaide - The Gem of South AustraliaOne of the prettiest cities in the Antipodes is Adelaide, the state capital of South Australia. Adelaide is a thriving place, contributing to the economy and cultural life of the nation. It is located on the coast of the Southern Ocean and is an important manufacturing base, particularly for car production. This fifth largest city in the country was established in 1836. It is also known for its sporting activities including the hosting of the Clipsal 500 V8 Supercar race. It's just a short ride away from the city to parkland and wildlife. The Cleland Conservation Park is in the Adelaide Hills and includes a wildlife park where visitors can see emus, koala bears and kangaroos. The park also works to help endangered animals such as rare species of curlew, wallaby and bettongs. Another protected area, also located in the hills of Adelaide Australia, is the Belair National Park. This is a treasured place for the residents of the city and for tourists. There are trails for horseback riding, hiking and biking. Children love the adventure playground and there are tennis courts and a lake. The city is also one of the most active supporters of the arts in the country and Adelaide is especially known for the number of festivals held. The Adelaide Festival of Arts has enjoyed international respect since its start in 1960 and features many genres, including classical and modern music, dance, opera and theater. There is also a film festival that supports local film makers by screening contemporary films and holding events. The Festival of Ideas has discussion panels and invites speakers to give talks on a different theme at each festival and has attracted many well-known figures such as Germaine Greer. World Music is showcased at the WOMADelaide Music Festival. This is a significant gathering and past performers include Crowded House, Jimmy Cliff and Peter Gabriel. Restaurants offer a mix of traditions. This is a direct result of a cosmopolitan population, with immigration coming from Germany, Italy and Greece. Many people also came from Vietnam after the Vietnam War. There is also a successful wine industry in the state and it was German émigrés who originated it. Adelaide Australia supports its local community and gives visitors a warm welcome. The mix of commerce and culture has revived the city from the economic depression of the 1970s. This is one of my top choices to visit Down Under. About the Author: K. Petit researches and enjoys adventure travel.
