Peru Culture

Peru is a country located ion the continent of South America. The culture of Peru contains a combination of native and European art forms. The reason for this mixed culture is that the country had been ruled by Europeans, having been a colony of Spain for a long time.

Before the arrival of the Europeans, the Incas ruled Peru. They were natives who had developed and mastered many art forms. Pottery was among the many art forms that were more advanced than the European culture.

Spanish colonization witnessed emphasis on production of metal work, textiles, and fine pottery. The Spanish also brought in their style of architecture, and many monasteries, churches, and palaces were built in the Mestizo style, which is a combination of the styles of the Europeans and the native Indians. These styles of architectures can be found at churches in Puno and Arequipa.

Folk music with local lyrics about subjects such as independence and the anarchic rule are common in Peru. Spanish is the main language that is used by Peruvians, although the natives use both Spanish and Quechua as their mother tongue in the highlands. There are about seventy languages that are spoken in Peru, and most of the natives do not use Spanish any more. Most of the Peruvians are Catholics, but they also continue to follow their traditional beliefs.

The cuisines of Peru are tasty and have an original regional flavor. Seafood is relished on the coast of Peru. Roasted guinea pig is a delicacy that has been developed by the Incas. There are various other dishes that have a Spanish influence, which is evident from the way steaks are prepared.

Paintings of Peru also have a mixed influence, a combination of Spanish and local civilizations. Famous painter Paul Gauguin's paintings were inspired by the style of fable characters and fairytales that influenced him during his stay in Lima.
