Alanya, a Turkish Paradise

Alanya is a town, 150 km out of the west of Antalya. The town has been named and renamed many times, but today it is named after Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of Modern Turkey.

There are some things in Alanya that can be found in most towns in this part of the world, such as the markets. Shop owners selling different spices and roasted nuts. In Alanya each Friday, the farmers bring in their fresh produce and sell it for negotiable prices.

The Town stretches itself out on the rocky land and is situated between two beaches. The mountain range, called the Taurus, forms a backdrop to the north. The beach to the west is named after Cleopatra. In 32BC, Cleopatra and Mark Anthony got married and he gave her the town as wedding present.

There are also caves dotted around the seaside. One of the larger ones, the Damlatas, also known as the "Cape of Dripping Stones" is beautiful covered with stalactites and stalagmites. Some of the other famous caves are the Fosforlu Magara, which has phosphorescent rocks and the Kizlar Magarasi. The Kizlar is only reachable by boat, which is why folktale has it, that pirates used to imprison their female captives there.

The Alanya Town is well known for is majestic Citadel, which was built in the 14th Century. There are 150 towers that punctuate the walls of the well-preserved Citadel. A red tower connects to the castle, which is another sight to behold.

The harbour at Alanya holds many bars, teahouses, cafes and restaurants, which cater for both international and traditional cuisine. Activities in the town range from seeing belly dancers in the amphitheatres through to parasailing off the beach for those who have a bit more spirit.

Owing to the Town being old, there is gorgeous architecture everywhere, including stunning mosques. The town also holds many resorts and villas. One of the more popular ones is based on a golf estate where you can both rent and buy property. The villas contain the elements of the beautiful Turkish architectural.

The villas range from one to four bedrooms and come in a variety of styles and features to cater for everybody's tastes. Most villas come with a pool to bathe in when the well-known heat of the area gets a bit much. The weather in Turkey is known to be pleasantly warm throughout most of the year, making it the perfect place to own a holiday spot.

The hospitality in Alanya is warm and welcoming, as they live truly by the old Turkish saying "A cup of coffee commits one to forty years of friendship."
