Can you 'do Scotland' in 3 daysOne of the most frequently asked questions accommodation providers are asked is 'I am touring Scotland in 3 days, travelling from Edinburgh, Inverness, the Western Isles and the west coast to Oban, is there anywhere else I can travel to see more?' Quite often the response is 'well pop in to Culluden on route' or 'you must see the Isle of Skye' when the real response should be 'don't be so ridiculous!'. How can anyone know anything about Scotland in 3 days, or 3 weeks for that matter. When I last visited the Isle of Skye, I sat down on the banks of Dunvegan on grass that was greener than I thought possible, the new lambs were bleeting and I could hear the faint sound of a piper playing a pibroch on the opposite shore. The sun was shining on the backs of the seals, basking on the island a few yards in front of me.I had just had lunch at the most incredible restaurant and life could not have been better. It made me reflect on the nature of tourism in Scotland, and the fact that to 'do Scotland in 3 days' is missing the point. Better to pick a spot and spend all 3 days in that one place. Rushing around Scotland is a waste of your visit, you will not experince what Scotland is. you will not experience Scotland. I am a piper, and my teacher (Anthony Macdonald) once said that "...it takes 7 years to realise that it will take another 7 years to play well" If you want to visit Scotland, better to take 3 weeks, or just visit one location and get to know it well.
