Praia da Luz - The Beach of Light, Western Algarve, Portugal

The seaside village of Praia da Luz (pronounced loozh) lies in the Algarve only 6km from Lagos to the west. Traditionally it has been a fishing village that specialized in octopus potting and once had a Tuna canning factory by the beach. There was an early settlement hear and the Romans left their mark in the form of a bath house and aqueduct.

Today Luz is a small yet thriving beach resort with numerous waterside apartments & villas. The main attraction is Luz's beach with its arced bay and stunning black rock sticking out into the ocean. It is a small place with a number of local bars and restaurants and 3 resort complexes with outdoor swimming pools and tennis courts.

Praia da luz is situated close to many other beautiful and unique beaches. Praia de Porto de Mós is a stretch of sand sheltered by low cliffs and is only an hour's walk along the cliff road to the east. It is a beautiful beach and due to its location often quiet and secluded. The picture postcard Praia Donna Anna is just outside Lagos as is the half beach (Meia Praia) with its pretty sand dunes. Out to the west within the natural reserve of Costa Vicentina are the best kept secret of the Algarve. Beaches with huge waves that can only be reached on dust tracks that can sometimes get washed away by the winter rains. Luz is an ideal place to head out for walks in the hills and countryside in the morning or late afternoon. It is also a great place to relax and listen to the birds and watch people go by. Down on the beach the hours pass by with the whisper of the waves lapping on the golden sands and in the evenings the stars light up the sky and the fisherman's boats sit out at sea.

Other than the glorious beaches Luz is a fully equipped resort with ample quality shops, restaurants & bars. Two water sports centers at the eastern end of the beach offer sail boats and for rent and Luz also has a deep-sea diving centre.

Outside of Luz you can make trips to Lagos, Sagres or Monchique, buy fresh food in the markets of Lagos, and enjoy the world famous bar scene and good value Portuguese restaurants.
