Europe's Best-kept Secret - Discover PolandPoland is one of Europe’s best-kept secrets. As a holiday destination, it may not have always topped the most popular lists but it is a stunning country steeped in history and well worth a visit. Here are the top five things to see. Oswiecim was the site of the Auschwitz German death camp. More than 1.5 million people, mostly Jews, were murdered during the Second World War at concentration camps and a visit to Oswiecim is a moving experience. Malbork Castle is the former base of the Teutonic Knights' Order. This Gothic Fortress and its museum are on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. The castle is situated on the River Nogat. Building of the castle began in 1270 and was completed in 1404. The Skull Chapel in Czermna is a must-see in Poland. The church was founded in 1776 by a local priest and is made up of human skulls and tibia bones. All the bones were the victims of the Silesian wars and epidemics. The town of Miedzyrzecz is one of Poland’s hidden treasures. Situated in the province of Lubuskie the town includes a 14th century castle and a unique museum featuring coffin portraits. Podzamcze Castle in the south of Poland is another of Poland’s stunning castles. Podzamcze is thought to be haunted by a previous owner who appears as a ghostly black dog dragging a chain. The Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw was built in the 1950’s as a gift from Stalin to the Polish nation. It is 234 metres high and offers the best views in Warsaw.
