Zagreb as the Heart of Croatia

Zagreb is a Croatian capital, a sovereign state of former Yugoslavia, since 1991. From that time, a lot of things have changed on account of the Government that intends to join its country to EU, rather then join to the community of former Yugoslavian states. Some former Zagreb or former Yugoslavian inhabitants are rather ironic while speaking of Zagreb nowadays, referring to Zagreb populace as a deprived little Vienna's provincials. Nevertheless, lots of former Yugoslavs recognize well that Zagreb inhabitants have their own style from the time when Croatia became independent, regardless of the civil war that recently took place in Balkans. As the one who regard herself as former Yugoslavian, I really remember this Zagreb style in 80s. For instance, in early 80s the publisher of Zagreb Town have been bringing out the finest humorous book ever, that was, more than 30 years ago on Balkan (with no hint of civil war). Its content was ironic with quite typical black humor, depicting comic catastrophic social and political routine of 90s. I do remember a lot of other things, peculiar just for Zagreb inhabitants (not obligatory fine or bad). Now, with a populace of about a million, Zagreb is officially the main city of self-assured people of Croats (plus other ethnic groups as the minority). It has a number of good museums and an exciting nightlife, to spend several days or weeks. The majority of Zagreb inhabitants go to Italy or Austria to do the shopping, consequently don't be too surprising when shopping concerns. Zagreb inhabitants speak Croatian however, many young people prefer English and German. Entire heart of the town, which is the most eye-catching, is probable to be seen when you take streetcar and get a ride for approximately 10 stations, since the city streetcars are for the most part going through the heart of city.
