National Parks In Croatia

There are eight declared national parks in Croatia , that is areas of exquisite natural qualities, which encompasses one or more preserved or by human use bit changed ecosystems. Only traditional agriculture and tourist recreational activities are allowed. In , eight national parks were declared. Position of our national parks clearly shows natural diversity of . So three parks are pronouncedly mountain Risnjak, Paklenica, Northern Velebit, three are of island type Kornati, Mljet, Brijuni, and two are clear example of rich karst hydrograph PlitviĨka jezera (Lakes of Plitvice) and Krka.

NATIONAL PARK PAKLENICA: National park Paklenica is situated in behind of Starigrad and encompasses two canyons, Velika and Mala Paklenica. National park Paklenica is magnificent karst phenomenon, and steep sides of canyon are high up to . Paklenica is an area of unique and unusual touch of sea and mountains, rich in forests of beech and black pine trees, caves and abysses. On the area of National Park Paklenica from sea shore to highest tops of Velebit there are around 800 herbal sorts. Of these, some 40 are endemic, plants of small spread.

NATIONAL PARK RISNJAK: National Park Risnjak was made national park in 1953. The importance of National Park Risnjak is in the fact that in not so big area, thanks to knot area of Gorski kotar, there intertwine different climate influences: sharp Alps climate, mild area of the , continental characteristics of Panonska nizina and mountain freshness of Dinaridi. Risnjak has an important role in health tourism and it is especially attractive for trips mountain climate, fields for winter sports, mountain tracks, hunting and fishing.

NATIONAL PARK NORTHERN VELEBIT: National Park Northern Velebit was declared in 1999 as eight and the youngest national park in . Area was made national park because of expressed differences of karst phenomena, richness of living world and exquisite natural beauties on relatively small area. Park is divided by numerous mountain tracks, of which the most famous is Premužićeva track, named after the builder, ing. Ant Premužić who made a project for it in far 1930, while the building was finished in 1933. track passes through the most beautiful and most interesting parts of northern Velebit. From mountain tops there is beautiful view of the and islands Pag, Rab, Goli, Prvi and Krk and behind of Lika from the continental side.

NATIONAL PARK KRKA: National park Krka is on the area of and river Krka is karst phenomenon which, penetrating towards the sea, shapes numerous lakes, cascades and rapids. On Island Visovac on the lake of the same name, between two most beautiful cascades Roški slap and Skradinski buk there is Franciscan monastery.

NATIONAL PARK KORNATI: National Park Kornati is group of islands of some 140 islands, isles and reefs situated in middle part of Croatian Adriatic. Because of its exquisite regional beauties, interesting geomorphology, big indented of coastal line and especially rich biocenosis of sea ecosystem in year 1980 greater part of sea ecosystem of seascape of Kornati was declared national park. Today NP "Kornati" encompasses are of some 220 km2 and includes 89 islands, isles and reefs in total, with approximately 238 of coast line. And regardless of this, relatively big number of islands, coastal part of park makes just something less than ¼ of total area, while the rest is sea ecosystem.

NATIONAL PARK MLJET: Island Mljet is the greenest Adriatic island, and the third of island belongs to National Park Mljet. Island Mljet was made national park because of exquisite natural beauty, richness of flora and fauna, composition of salty lakes representing unique geological and oceanographic phenomenon, and because of great cultural historical heritage, which, in continuing series from time of Illyrian tribes, Roman Empire, Republic of Dubrovnik, reaches to present days of life of modern man who made stabile living conditions here in harmony with intact nature.

NATIONAL PARK BRIJUNI: Island Brijuni by southwest coast of , was made national park in 1983. it encompasses area of , and is made of fourteen islands and isles, of which the biggest are Veliki and Mali Brijuni. Islands is grown in and sub Mediterranean vegetation, offering tourists feeling of intact nature. On the island there are zoo, pheasant grove and safari park, with numerous different animal species from all over the world. Traces of man on the island date from younger neolith, and amongst numerous archeological sites the most important is prehistorically village on hill Gradina. In bay Verige there are remains of representative country villa of Roman temple, and on the western coast late antique Byzantine castrum and Byzantine basilica of Saint Mary from 6 century.

NATIONAL PARK PLITVICE LAKES: National Park Plitvice Lakes is the biggest and the oldest national park and one of the most famous European parks and natural monument placed on the List of world heritage of UNESCO. This is forest, mountain area in which there are 16 bigger and smaller lakes. With numerous sorts of birds and small game, in Park there are also deer, bears, boars and wild cats, and in the waters trout. National Park Plitvice Lakes is the famous tourist destination and trip site.
