Get up and Go Skiing in Austria

It has long been a nirvana for skiers of all abilities and, as well as staging the FIS World Championships on no less than six occasions, has hosted the Winter Olympics twice. It's easy to see why; fantastic facilities, super snow and good accessibility from all parts of the world. Now, with the proliferation of cheap flights it is even easier for UK residents to sample some of the best slopes in the world and enjoy skiing in Austria.

The Austrian Alps offer a host of resorts that are suitable for both experienced and novice skiers as well as everything in between. There are lots of names that are synonymous with skiing in Austria, but probably the most recognisable and twice host to the Winter Olympics is Innsbruck. Beautifully located and fantastically equipped the area still manages to maintain an Austrian feel, offering both tourists and locals a genuine taste of the Alpine experience. Plus, as well as having some of the best skiing in Austria Innsbruck is fast becoming the European snowboarding capital, boasting some of the biggest and best snow parks in the region.

The capital of the Tyrol, Innsbruck has several well-known resorts; Seefeld, Nordkette, Axamer Lizum and Stubai Valley; the latter offering all year round skiing because of it's glaciated terrain. There's plenty of variety and superb transportation between the ski areas means that it's quite possible to start skiing in the morning in one valley and finish your day in a totally different ski area.

Other famous resort and town names renowned for skiing in Austria include Kitzbuhel, Arlberg and Saalbach/Hinterglemm. Infamous for its après-ski Kitzbuhel offers plenty of choice when it comes to the size and difficulty of slopes, and the types of accommodation available. Of course, the nightlife is buzzing and if you really want you can party 'til sun-up at the plethora of pubs and nightclubs in the resort. Arlberg is favoured by our very own Royal Family, offering luxurious accommodation and, thanks to its altitude at over 2,200 metres above sea-level, a ski season stretching from December to April. The joint resort of Saalbach/Hinterglemm possesses over 200 km of ski area, 60 lifts and superb après-ski and is an extremely popular destination, catering to all levels of skiing ability.

As well as the well-known areas of the Tyrol, there is also excellent skiing in Austria in the high altitude Vorarlberg province, close to Switzerland and boasting such excellent resorts at Lech, Stuben and Zurs. Or, if you want to stay around Salzburg try the excellent skiing at Zell am See or Obertauren.

Wherever you go skiing in Austria you'll find there are plenty of cheap flights available from the UK. Head to Salzburg or Vienna, with the former being the most convenient, especially the resorts at Innsbruck and Kitzbuhel. Flights to Salzburg are available from most regional UK airports as well the major ones.
