Wonders of Costa Rica; Destination 1: Tortuguero National ParkFrequented by tourists from all over the world, the Parque Nacional Tortuguero is another significant turtle nesting site in Costa Rica. Among the most important nesting areas in the Western Hemisphere of the endangered green turtle, the stunning Parque Nacional Tortuguero lies on Costa Rica's beautiful Caribbean coast in the northeastern region of the country. Tortuguero which means 'Region of Turtles' in Spanish is one of the most famous destinations in Costa Rica. Most of the tours departs from San Jose area hotels and, since the area is surrounded by rainforest, main services such as transportation, local bilingual guide, all meals as well as lodging are included in the tours. The most common and recommended package is the 3 Days/ 2 Nights one. The hotels are ready to entertain its visitors, offering daily tours to the Tortuguero park, to the Turtle museum, the village of Tortuguero and so on. Staying at the hotels of the area is a very relaxing experience: after the tours, we recommend a pleasant walk to the Caribbean sea, relaxing at the swimming pool at the hotel, or spending a couple of hours reading or just resting under the fabulous trees of the rainforest. Home to around 170 species of reptiles and amphibians, this park is also the habitat of 60 species of mammals and 300 different species of birds as well. A great place for bird watching, both migratory and native birds can be seen throughout the park including herons, egrets, trogons, parrots, toucans, jacanas, kingfishers, anhingas, kites and hawks. Some other common animals here include; caimans, crocodiles, sloths, iguanas, frogs, bats, basilisk lizards, otters, peccaries and ocelots. A variety of crustaceans are also found here. Another endangered animal found in the park is the shy West Indian manatee. Researchers believe that only 100 manatees now inhabit the remote lagoons within Tortuguero National Park. Tortuguero is one of the major natural treasures of Costa Rica, the flora and fauna are abslolutely exotic, and the nesting of the Green Turtle is such a magical experience that can't be explained in words. The journey by boat through the cannals is very excitng and the visitor can have a lot of fun listening to the guide explanations as well as learning about history, biology, geography and what's life like in Costa Rica. We truly recommend the visit to Tortuguero National Park if you are planning to come to Costa Rica.
