Singapore - The Lion CityLocated in the heart of fascinating Southeast Asia, Singapore is a unique, vibrating and dynamic city. It is the smallest country in Southeast Asia which consists of 63 islands, including the main island itself. A city, an island and a country, Singapore is all rolled into one. Singapore, also known as the Lion City was founded in 1819. According to a famous folklore, the naming is attributed to a prince named Sang Nila Utama, who was caught in a terrible storm that did not cease until he had thrown his crown into the water. The waters calmed immediately after that, and he sailed to the closest island he could see. The first animal he saw after he had set foot on the island was supposedly a lion. Therefore, he decided to name the island Singapura. Singapore is one of the world's biggest and busiest ports. It has a highly developed and successful free market economy that enjoys a remarkably open and corruption-free environment, stable prices, and a per capita GDP equal to that of the top four West European countries. The economy depends heavily on exports, particularly in electronics and manufacturing. Tourism is one of the largest industries of Singapore. The Merlion is one of the best-known tourist icons of Singapore. Other admired tourist attractions include the Singapore Zoo and its Night Safari along with the tourist island of Sentosa, Jurong Bird Park, Singapore Science Center, Botanic Garden, Singapore Discovery Center, Crocodile farm, Singapore Chinese and Japanese garden. Singapore though a small country, offers a wide range of sights and experiences to the visitors. The island has a pulsating events calendar. To offer fine accommodation facilities to travelers visiting the city, Singapore has many cheap budget hotels, restaurants and lodges. With its friendly and welcoming people, state-of-the-art infrastructure and something new happening everyday, you will take away pleasant memories of the most charismatic city.
