Cape Town's big six: The Victoria and Alfred Waterfront

From Spices to Armani, it's no secret that lucrative trading at the V& A Waterfront has come a long way. One of the driving forces behind a century of development trends, judging by 20 million visits per year, is an ever- growing demand for public access.

Some things never change
Circa 1920 word traveled quickly after the discovery of bling in South Africa, and due increasing demand for this commodity, a new Victoria basin was added to the existing Alfred Basin (which was born in 1860)

Preserving the past
The original port cabin's office, more frequently referred to as the Historic Clock Tower, is one of many buildings that have been restored to preserve their original Victorian architecture.

A wealth of culture
The Robben Island Exhibition and Information Centre is located next to the Tower and incorporates a museum exploring the political struggle, and people who fought to uphold its principles. A tour of the island provides educational insights into their journey.

The V&A mini-safari
Robben Island is a protected nature reserve, and true to any African adventure, one is guaranteed to spot some of the 'smaller five'. Bontebok, seabirds and protected Jackass penguins all form part of the Island's ecosystem. Back at the quays, a colony of Cape fur seals can be seen lounging around the docks, much like the locals along Camps Bay's strip.

Entertainment
Aquarium
300 specialty stores
70 eateries
7 hotels
14 conference venues
Ferry, sunset, and harbour cruises, helicopter charters ...and miles of mall for your shopping pleasure!
